Hi Indie Hackers,
This is my first submission here so let me know if there is anything wrong with my post :)
I built a GitHub App called CommitCheck (https://www.commitcheck.com/). The idea came from a problem I was having at work. We wanted to ensure that all Git commit message have a JIRA number in them so that it's easy to match Git commits with their associated JIRA number. We wanted something that would prevent GitHub PRs from being merged if the JIRA message was missing, just like CircleCI or Dependabot.
I believe there are many developers out there who would benefit from it. I did a search on GitHub and found numerous PR discussions saying things like "You forgot to add a JIRA number, please remember to do it next time". This is exactly the problem I'm trying to solve.
I read an IH interview with Dependabot (https://www.indiehackers.com/interview/dependabot-696f9b110f). They gave some great advise:
"At this point we had what we thought was a brilliant product and were literally struggling to give it away for free. Finally, we tried some sales. Every day I'd run a search on GitHub for PRs with the word "update" in the title. If Dependabot could have created the PR then I'd comment on it asking if they wanted to give Dependabot a try."
I tried the strategy myself but GitHub flagged my account as potential spam. Now I'm trying to decide what to do next. How can I promote and sell my app?
Thanks IH!
Hey Tom!
Maybe try to write some use case for that on https://dev.to/ or approach some open source maintainers so they could check it out and I'm pretty sure they will spread a word about it further!
Hey! Yeah that’s a good idea. I’ll definitely try that
You should try AdWords, it costs money but if you target your keywords (e.g. "commit format check") you should be getting people looking for your product & the pricing won't be to competitive.
Yeah that’s true. I might set myself a small budget
