How did Indie Hackers get its first users?

I am tinkering with an idea about starting an online community around a niche that's different from Indie Hackers. I can make a website just fine, but I am wondering how the first few users started using this platform? The value proposition is inherently built into the audience so I imagine that there must be a real cold start problem.
