I'm a solo founder who just launched my product, and honestly, getting the first paid user feels harder than building the product itself.
I've spent months building, testing, fixing bugs, and talking to users.
Now I'm wondering:
Did your first customer come from LinkedIn?
Product Hunt?
Reddit?
Cold outreach?
Friends and family?
Existing network?
What actually worked?
I'd love to hear real stories from founders who went from 0 → 1 paying customer.
Sometimes it feels like everyone talks about scaling, but not enough people talk about getting that very first sale.
Any advice would be appreciated. 🙏
For me it was direct outreach. I’m building in a very specific music-tech niche, so reaching the right people individually worked better than trying to generate lots of traffic.
The interesting lesson was that a small number of highly relevant people can be much more valuable than hundreds of random visitors.
Now I’m trying to figure out what channel can reproduce that consistently.
I'm at this stage right now too building the product has felt much easier than figuring out distribution and getting the first real users.
What I'm realizing is that "getting users" and "finding people who actually have the problem" are two very different things. I'm trying to spend more time talking to people who already experience the problem instead of just promoting the product everywhere.
I'm especially interested in hearing what worked for founders who had no existing audience. Did you find your first customer through direct outreach, communities, content, or something else?
I'd rather learn the repeatable process than just chase a launch spike.
I think the interesting part is separating “people who are interested” from “people who actually have enough urgency to pay.” Have you noticed any pattern in the people who showed interest but didn't become paying users?
one thing i’d separate is talked to users from asked people to pay. both matter but they answer totally different questions. no need to charge a lot, just make the ask real before another month of polishing.
For me the first payment came from 1:1 outreach to people who'd already posted the problem — not launch posts. Found them on Reddit/IH by searching pain phrases, replied helpfully, DM'd after they engaged. Took ~10 qualified conversations, not 100 cold messages. Reddit works if you already participate there; otherwise IH/X DMs to founders who just posted about distribution pain.
I'm on the same stage right now, building the product was waaay easier than finding customers or paid users.
All my firsts users has come from friends I know my product could be helpful in any way, but after that, it is hard to find more users
I can completely relate. 😅
Getting the first few users from friends and people in your network feels achievable, but finding users beyond that circle is where the real challenge begins.
As a solo founder, I'm learning that distribution, marketing, and community building are skills of their own.
Good luck with your journey, and thanks for sharing your experience! If you have a chance, I'd love for you to check out WorkZo AI on Product Hunt and share your thoughts. Feedback from fellow builders is always valuable. 🚀
