Hey everyone,
Hope you all are having a great day.
I am building my first Saas application and I have finished developing the main tool. But I don't have much idea on how do I add the subscription based user system in it. My application is built on Svelte.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Stripe is pretty straight forward and is a lot cheaper than Chargebee. It definitely requires some coding for subscriptions.
Stripe is pretty easy to implement - especially if you use the hosted checkout page and the hosted subscription dashboard (where your customers can manage their sub). I did look at Chargebee and its too expensive.
I've heard good things about Chargebee, although I haven't used it personally
Interesting. I would take a look into it. Thank you, Nicolas.
I just finished implementing stripe and it was pretty painless. The only code I had to write related to payments was creating stripe customers and creating both the checkout and billing portals. The checkout portal is where customers purchase a subscription. The billing portal is where customers generally manage their subscription (plan, payment method, invoice history, etc.) This solution was nice because all I have to do is redirect the customer to an excellent and secure payment solution, I only worry about implementing the saas features.
There are a lot of different payment solutions, but their landing pages are more or less interchangable. It's normal to be confused. Chances are you'll end up deciding between Paddle and Stripe, but it turns out that you can't compare Paddle with Stripe, they’re in different categories.
Stripe and Braintree are Payment Gateways. They let you get money from credit cards and leave the rest to you, including retries, charge backs, VAT and invoices. The customer buys directly from you.
Paddle and FastSpring are Merchants of Record. They resell your product and handle everything including taxes and invoices and you get one wire transfer once a month with your earnings, minus their cut. You don’t have any customers, they do.
And Chargebee is something else altogether - they just manage your subscription and billing logic. It’s useless by itself, you need to connect it to a payment gateway.
I have a detailed guide about which payment solution a SaaS should choose: https://jasminek.net/blog/post/payment-solutions/
Woah. It seems like you have done a lot of homework on this one. I will definitely take a look at the blog post. Thanks!
Check-out Paddle (https://paddle.com/). Biggest selling point for me is that it handles sales tax for you across a large number of countries (https://paddle.com/support/which-countries-does-paddle-charge-vat-for/). You can also set-up different prices for different currencies, and show localised product pricing to the end consumer. Very nifty.
Unrelated; I really like paddle's landing page. However it is a bit on the noisy side.
I like how they only charge a transaction fee. Have you used their services, personally?
Yep, I'm using them on formflare.io. You can view any transaction, which country it's been associated with, tax that's been withheld, their fee, and then the remaining net amount.
In your register/signup page the footer links are broken because of #
@pandabridge Oh, great. Thank you for sharing.
It sounds great, but pricing is not really clear. Is it same price level than stripe?
They charge 5% + $0.5
The pricing is not obvious at all, but you can find it under their legal pack (https://paddle.com/legal/#4-paddle-discount). It's more expensive than Stripe, but not having to deal with tax is totally worth it (or worse, making a mistake and being fined lots at a later point).
I think Stripe is a much better alternative to Chargebee, its much cheaper if you are willing to work a little bit more.
Another vote fore Chargebee! Have implemented it in smaller SaaS products and am currently adding it to a larger Enterprise products. Has done a fantastic job and has very reasonable pricing for startups
You could try fastspring.com. Along with subscription management, they also deal with taxes. So, if you are planning to sell globally they are going to offload all of your tax-related work.
