How do you design a landing page that converts? (5 proven tips)

You launch your Instagram ads.

You launch Google ads.

All this expensive traffic is going to one specific place: your landing page.

This landing page can make or break your entire marketing campaign. It’s the foundation of your digital plan.

And it's an easy way to waste money when you have a low performing page.

To help, here are 5 must-reap tips for designing a landing page that converts

TIP 1: Write a Benefit Focused Headline

The headline must focus on the main benefit for the persona you are targeting.

It’s critical to use second-person language with the word “you”.

This also means the headline should NOT talk about the top features of your product or service.

As an example, let’s look at the headline of the website for GrowthHit. Here they use second person when they say “Your external growth team”.

By being customer centric, the site visitor knows that they get a growth team at their fingertips.

TIP 2: Select A Complimentary Hero Image of Video

The image or the video in the hero section of the landing page should compliment the benefit focused headline.

It can be an image that plays to the aspiration of what the customer will look like with the product.

For tech products, the graphic can show how the product works.

Or the image can play to the pain point your product is solving.

For GrowthHit, they use a graphic that illustrates the pain-point of founders that have low conversion rates. They use customer language in the graphic like “our sales funnel isn’t converting” to drive this home.

Ideally, a visitor will identify with the combination of this image and headline.

TIP 3: Create Customer Centric Explainer Copy

Below the headline is where the main copy lives on the landing page.

This is where you clearly say what your product is and highlight your one key feature.

Remember to use conversational language and avoid technical language and acronyms unless your customers uses them.

For GrowthHit, the phrase “data-driven experiments” is used to say exactly what this growth team does.

The phrase “data-driven” was used because that is what the Growthhit customers say they want in a growth team.

Tip: Keep it under 20 words so it’s easy to scan.

TIP 4: A Unique Call to Action

Add a clear call to action button that is unique to your site. This button can live in the hero section or as a sticky navigation so it’s always visible.

The text on top of the button needs to be unique and true to the next step in the user journey.

Tech companies can offer a free product or free download .

If it’s generic like “join now”, people will gloss over it.

As an example, GrowthHit uses “Get a FREE Strategy Call” to show visitors the next step to get started.

TIP 5: Social Proof that Validates

Include social proof to help assure the visitor of your credibility as they consider becoming a customer.

Social proof allows other credible sources to talk about a product.

You can use logos of partners, testimonials from customers, or stats of your impact (EX: Worked with 1,000 brands).

As an Example, GrowthHit uses logos of past clients and quotes from happy clients.

It’s also best practice to put the social proof close to your call to action to help with the next step.

So before you launch a digital campaign make sure you start with the end goal in mind. Design a landing page that’s built to convert so you maximize ROI.
