How do you hire your first engineer?

I have done the hiring process for VC back startups a bunch of time with technical founders. I'm wondering if it differs in the bootstrapped world and how non technical founders go about hiring this role.

Here is my current process I used at a few companies

  1. Keep job postings fresh (use tech slacks, ycombinator who is hiring, meetups, recruiters)
  2. Phone Screen applicants. (30 mins mostly selling the company and 2-3 quick tech questions. Name a design pattern)
  3. 3 hr coding pairing (repl.it or some shared environment and work on a problem together)
  4. 30 min culture (Are you process oriented or goal oriented?...)

Each step, I could probably write a blog post about. Hopefully this can help someone. Also wondering if this is a consulting opportunity for myself
