How do you prototype electronic device without own r&d?

Hi,
I have an idea for an electronic device but no resources to build a prototype myself, and not much money to finance someone else build it for me. I reached out to a few manufacturers on Alibaba but their MOQ and mold fee are not too high for me.
Anyone keen to share their experience starting with hardware project?
