How do you reach first users?

Hi everyone,

I build an app for Shopify and it is approved. Now I'm looking for ways to reach my potential users, make free my product for them, learn more about their usage and needs and continue with feature iteration.

I have two main segment of users.

  1. New Shopify Users: People who opened their Shopify store within a month.
  2. Pro Drop Shipping Users: People who have at least two different drop shipping store on Shopify.

I'm currently trying content marketing on Reddit and Shopify Community but I also want to learn your advices for my case and also your methods even audience is irrelevant.

Thanks,

What I learned from many failed projects

    1. Focus on superusers. People you don't have to sell to, they automatically understand the vision.
    2. Incentivise referrals. Turn superusers into your biggest advocates by letting them get a piece of the pie for every sign up.
    3. Incentivise sign ups, X amount of for new users, X free for new users etc
    4. Create fear of missing out. Limited time discounts. Limited early access etc
    5. Ask for feedback. You WILL NOT get feedback unless you ask
    6. Cold email/ cold call - Don't ask for something. Give something. Free E-Book, Free Webinar etc
    7. Add value. Engage in communities like this. Start conversations. Engage in conversations. Answer questions.
    8. Work on your funnel. You wouldn't go to a club and just ask for somebody's number without saying hello. A free trial is for those already ready to take action.
    9. Human experience. People want to engage with a Muhammed not just a brand. Excellent customer service for those 1 or 2 people you may already have
    10. Social proof. This comes back to reviews and ratings but who in the space would make a great ambassador to help promote the product

I can't tell you when, but do this everyday and it compounds and one day something just connects like magic.

I'll send you an email marketing resource that may help you with your lead generation and audience building, just lmk

I'm actually doing research on this topic with Zero to Users. Since you're basically:

    a) An app on the Shopify app store
    b) Targeting e-commerce sellers

From my research on what worked for SaaS businesses targeting e-commerce owners, you might want to try these 4 channels:

    a) Rank (higher) on the Shopify app store itself. Read this article, it has several Shopify examples on it.

    b) Shopify ads. You can figure out which keywords convert from there and then optimize for those to rank higher organically on the Shopify app store.

    c) Cold email. Seen 2-3 SaaS companies that target e-commerce report good results on it

    d) FB Groups. Plenty of dropshipping/shopify groups on FB. Read the group rules though (and find a nice angle, don't just post your link, find a way to post so it's a win-win for both the community and you).

    Hope this helped!

I scaled my Shopify app to >1,000 downloads and $3k in ARR so here’s my perspective:

    1. Start with small Shopify communities. r/shoppy, r/sideprojects, etc. places you want to post to. Get visibility and downloads.

    2. Customer service is everything. Reach out to your first installs and ask them if you are solving their problem. If not, ask what they need. Then build.

    3. Do 1 and 2 until you get a few users and then ask for reviews from those you help and have positive experiences with you.

    4. With enough 5-star reviews (I have just 7), app SEO becomes the game.

    Best of luck!

Note: it's r/sideproject (singular), r/sideprojects (plural) is a private subreddit

    Hi Muhammed

I would start by doing it the old fashion way and contacting Shopify users one by one.

There are several tools online that can help you figure out which Shopify stores are out there. Earlier this year I was looking into an app for Shopify as well, and used this tool to get a list of retailers.

    https://storeleads.app/?ref=quora

Tyler Kovacs, the founders, is super friendly and helpful so I'd suggest reach out to him on LinkedIn as well.

I contacted them one by one and found out that there was no need for the app I had in mind.

      Hi @Temujin2795,

It looks GREAT! I'll get in touch with them.

@mtufekyapan - some quick comments after visiting your website.

The English grammar used on the site is not very good or compelling. Seems like you need help from a good copywriter, content writer, or someone familiar with writing compelling landing page copy.

Growth Suite might be too abstract a name, unless you can come up with a killer and simple tagline.

"Customer Support & Onsite Marketing Tools" is a lot to digest, and sounds like there are multiple things I need to use. In briefly looking at your software, it moreso sounds like you have an Intercom or Crisp alternative. I believe there's a better and more precise way to describe Growth Suite.

Since your product is similar to Intercom, Crisp, or other apps, you may want to target Shopify sites that already use one of those tools. You may be able to use Builtwith.com to find sites that use Shopify and one of those apps. Or Shopify, and none of those apps.

I'm not sure I understand the target of Pro Drop Shippers -- any site shopify site could use Growth Suite. Why do you feel Drop Shippers is a micro-target?

      Hi @iammike,

Thanks a lot for your comments. I'm aware of gramer issues and looking for a solution for it. If you know someone who can help me, please share :) Now I'm searching freelancers webpages.

Actually Growth Suite has three different widget right now. Simpler alternatives to Intercom, Crisp is the first one. There is a popup alternative and Instagram style story widget, too.

After reaching first users and talking with them, I plan to validate a few more concepts and continue to adding them. Because of this I didn't focus on only one widget. Although I'm not sure this strategy, maybe focusing on only one widget can be better.

      You're 100% right about all Shopify users can use it. However I find hard to marketing for all users so I thought that;
      a. New Shopify User: They would be better for us since we are new and focused on our users, they can use our product for free and we can quickly develop new features for them.
      b. Pro Drop Shippers: They have communities and we also give them a much better prices than other apps. So I thought they can choose us because of these advantages.

But in the long term, as you said, all of the Shopify users can easily use this product.

Thanks a lot for your comments.

        You're very welcome.

Freelance marketing writers can definitely be found by way of Upwork, or even here on IH. I could help, but my hourly rate would likely be more than others.

Regardless, I think someone could do a first-pass thoughtful rewrite taking only about 5 hours of time.

Terms like "chatbot" and "widget" are more developer-friendly terms then Shopify site owner friendly, so I believe you should rethink that terminology as well.

Then, it would be good to do some modest paid advertising/promotion on Shopify to see what type of information you could collect.

I don't have any Shopify stores (yet) so I don't have a way to provide any meaningful feedback related the site-owner usage experience -- there's probably an opportunity there.

Lastly, I think you're "Large" pricing seems/feels high. That said, I haven't looked at the alternatives to see how they price their tools.

Separately, at some point, it might be worth considering broadening your addressable market by allowing usage on sites with Wordpress + WooCommerce.

        Good luck!

          Hi @iammike

Thanks a lot for detailed responses. I'm collecting feedback from UX flow and your developer friendly terms exactly is an important issue for me.

Wordpress + WooCommerce and other platforms always in my mind, our technical structure is also available rapidly shipping these features. However I want to touch Shopify users first, then looking forward to expand other platforms.

I hope that I can succeed this and share all details here with IH fellows.
