How does one determine if one has made something that people want?

YC is famous for the tagline "make something people want".

At the early stages, it's pretty clear when you've built something no one wants. Whether you're building consumer or B2B, it seems easier to to know this answer earlier.

But because I've got a few dozen very engaged users, I'm not certain if I've built something that:

  1. Not enough people want (wrong product) OR
  2. People want; I just need to find more of them (invest in marketing/sales)

In consumer SaaS, this seems like an even harder question to answer than in enterprise.

In turn, this makes some product questions hard to answer:

  1. Do I focus on these highly engaged users? But what if I make the product too specialized and there aren't enough users that match this profile?
  2. Do I take this as a signal that the product is too focused on these "power users" and need to step out?

In other words, how much should I lean into the early adopters and is that a dangerous path?

I would love to hear from folks who have been in this situation where you've built something that has great traction with early adopters and how you determined if these early adopters were a false signal or a clear message to find more of the same personas.
