How NOT to launch on Product Hunt 🙅

In this blog post, I'm going to share my experience with launching my NFT marketing SaaS, DataDegen.com, on Product Hunt and the mistakes I made along the way.

What happened

I had planned to launch DataDegen.com on Product Hunt for weeks in advance, but unfortunately, development on the SaaS got delayed. Instead of pushing back the launch date on Product Hunt, I decided to keep it as is, thinking that it wouldn't be a big deal.

But when the SaaS finally launched a few days ago, the Product Hunt launch had already passed. As a result, I only received 2 upvotes, one of which was from myself.

Where I messed up

The biggest mistake I made was not pushing back the launch date on Product Hunt when development got delayed. I should have realized that a successful launch on Product Hunt is heavily dependent on timing and that launching a product before it's actually ready is not a good idea.

Another mistake I made was not properly promoting the launch on my own channels. I relied too heavily on Product Hunt and didn't do enough to drive traffic and engagement to the listing.

How I'd do better next time

If I were to launch DataDegen.com on Product Hunt again, I would make sure to push back the launch date if needed and properly promote the launch on my own channels.

I would also make sure that the SaaS is fully functional and ready for launch before listing it on Product Hunt.

Tips for others

  • Don't launch on Product Hunt before your product is ready
  • Promote your launch on your own channels to drive traffic and engagement
  • Be mindful of timing and make sure to push back the launch date if needed
  • Be prepared to engage with the community and answer any questions they may have

Conclusion

In conclusion, launching on Product Hunt can be a great way to get visibility for your product, but it's important to do it the right way. My experience with launching DataDegen.com on Product Hunt serves as a cautionary tale of what not to do. By following the tips and lessons outlined in this post, you can increase your chances of a successful launch on Product Hunt.

  1. 1

Can someone explain to me why product hunt is a big deal?

  2. 1

It happens to a lot of people and I think it is good to build a community on twitter, discord, telegram, or any other social media platform to avoid such failures.

    1. 1

agreed. definitely noted for next time

  3. 1

Yeah needing your own network to drive traffic to an app to drive traffic is rough.

That said I feel like I'm most interested in what ways your product wasn't ready? I feel like there's an interesting conversation to be had between "Ready for Product Hunt" and MVP but from this I'm not sure if the product was live or was at an MVP status at all

    1. 1

it wasn't finished, the development end date got pushed. hit a couple roadblocks. the product was not live, just a landing page. so when it went live people expected a full product but it was just a landing page unfortunately.
