How to Find Focus with Figma

Have you ever been ambitious? Have you underestimated the amount of discipline, and focus it takes to reach a goal? This was me at the beginning of this week. My goal was to have a mock-up done in Figma by Sunday.

I have no prior design experience. So I started with a black sheet of paper and sketched out screens. Now I have to translate those drawings from physical to digital.

Problem is., I don’t know how to use Figma. I heard it is the most complete design tool but where do I start? The YouTube videos I came across were well done but assumed I had prior knowledge.

Most digital tools have a tutorial section on their website. On Tuesday, I found how I can start turning my sketches into a digital representation of my app. It’s Friday morning, and I am still learning 😂

I haven’t finished my mock-up but everything is starting to make sense. Figma does a great job teaching you how to use their tool and the fundamentals of design. Building my first mock-up will take more time than I anticipated.

Do not underestimate the time it takes to learn a new tool. I am falling in love with Figma every day. This week I learned, the price I need to pay to create good and thoughtful designs. The gap between your ideal result and your skill level is the work you are willing to put in.

This week has been humbling. Next week, I will set more thoughtful goals. I can’t wait to see how fast I can produce mock-ups a year from now.

On Sunday, I sketched step by step on how I wanted my app to look. My problem was I did not know how to use the tool. Tools are great but they are only intelligent amplifiers. Tools help technicians, who have mastered the fundamentals of a niche skill. Figma is teaching me design while I focus on the fundamentals.

Share and show me what you are working on in Figma 🙏🏽
