How to improve your speaking voice

hey Indies,

Like most of you, i have been spending time during the pandemic using Lunchclub, a networking service that handles all the administrative minutia of finding the right people & booking meetings.

I have also been developing my speaking skills via a morning routine, which consists of:

  • 20x deep belly breaths (to get the blood flowing)
  • 5x breath-holds
  • 5x touching my toes
  • 5x vocal fry (grudge sound)
  • 5x viking battle cries (yell: Heee using the diaphram)
  • 5x "Big-face, little-face" (smile like you're seeing your best friend for the first time in 10 years, then smush your face like you're eating a source candy)
  • 5x tongue twisters (she sells sea shells down by the sea shore, etc.)
  • Read 1 page out loud (i use Daily Stoic, since its 1pg/day)
  • 1 min impromptu speaking (recorded with Otter so i can review my transcript)

All of this takes ~20 mins to complete. I try to do it every day, but sometimes I'm too busy. My goal is to do it consistently for a year and continue to improve my voice and public speaking skills. I figure it's such a simple thing with so many benefits (more engaging conversations, sound better on camera/phone, more speaking confidence). I've done it for around 2 months and during this time two friends (who had no idea I have developed this routine) told me that my voice sounded clearer. Anyway, recommend trying it out for those that want to improve their speaking skills. Also, I found it to be a great way to refocus after lunch when I'm a bit tired or during the afternoon lull.

There's a couple problems though.

  1. Getting live feedback (on filler words, tonality, etc.)
  2. Finding a place to practice impromptu speaking

My thought is that it would be cool to have a service like Lunchclub that matches you with other peeps that want to develop their public speaking. Imagine Lunchclub meets Toastmasters.

So i put together this post and a little notion page to see if any Indie Hackers would also find value in this. It has a sign up form at the bottom if this is something you'd like to try out.

Any thoughts or feedback?

Any Zoom speaking hacks you'd like to share?
