Short tutorial: How to Lose Position #1 on Google in 4 Easy Steps
Disclaimer - It was positioned #1 for the following keywords βhosted status pageβ.
TL;DR:

So, there I was, fine-tuning Caddyfile for Hosted Status Page.
I was right at tuning those pesky headers. It came down to checking if X-Robots-Tag was configured properly, and I decided to change it fix it!
By setting it to none.
It was back on December 29th 2020.
For some reason, I thought that if I set it to none (none as in no restrictions) it will let in all those web crawlers and continue indexing it as they did up until then.
β οΈ Obviously, none is equivalent to noindex.
That's the price you pay when you act smart π¨βπ§.

Well, it's been like that for the entire month now. I figured out accidentally by going to the Google Search Console to check if there are any issues or something worth fixing.
Well, there was π€£π€£π€£
So, if your Product ends up as mine did, simply fix your headers (or check for any <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> tags throughout your pages) and request reindexing from the Search Console mentioned above.
Anyway, RTFM guys, and don't fix stuff that works!
Sorry for the long post.
Wish you all a happy Monday!
Cheers!
Ouch, on a sidenote have you found any tool which spits out header, ssl and other information from a url and scans them for bad configurations?
Honestly didn't even think about that. It's a nice idea.
It reminds me when I released a new version of my app, something like two years ago. I unknowingly broke the analytics reporting code. After releasing, I saw a downfall of the active users, even if it was growing steadily before the release. I brainstormed for more than one month to understand why people were hating this new version so much... ^^'

Oh my... That feeling must be terrible in the end π
Good thing you didn't do anything of much greater significance though.
yes after all it was a minor mistake, but still I felt so stupid!
We learn by mistakes.
It's good we figured it out only after 1 month hahaha π€£π€£π€£
Oof. Did you get de-indexed or just lose rankings?
Both π
Will have to reinvest time in SEO.
Brutal. Hope you manage to recover your rankings soon!
It's back now!!! π€― Reindexed and ranks were reverted...

Nice! Can confirm I'm seeing you on the first page for that search. That's pretty awesome after being noindexed for a month, how long ago did you restore the header tags?
Should be ~16h ago, according to the modified timestamp on the file itself.
Perhaps they just put it to the stand-by mode and just restored everything to the previous state?!
Could be, maybe Google has changed the way they handle noindex situations so that the sites position was just "paused" instead of being removed. Whatever the case, it's pretty awesome that you're back in under a day!
