Effective feedback refers to giving valuable and corrective information to employees for improving their performance.
Ways to provide effective feedback:
Begin with a positive comment like your employee's latest achievements. This will set a great example for everyone on your team.
Say after giving positive feedback pause and allow your employees to process what you’ve just said and give them time to respond. Later mention what improvements are to be done from their side to improve negative feedback given by you.
When effective feedback starts positively, then constructive criticism, followed by actionable steps will give employees an opportunity for improvement.
Don’t base feedback based on rumors circulating the workspace.
Be objective in providing feedback. Turn your observation into data points and make your feedback solid and impactful.
When you lead the conversations it shows you are aware of the problem and see how it affects everyone by taking proactive steps to solve the same.
Provide feedback frequently. The Sooner you provide your employees with feedback, the sooner they will be making necessary changes.
Remember the goal of your feedback is to improve employees' performance and not to corner employees.
This is really great, but I also think it is important to ask your employees how they like to receive feedback, and to take that into consideration. For example, some people only like to receive feedback (praise or critical) in private.
I also think it's important to be cognizant of the mode of communication. Today, many of us work remotely and while it may be easy to provide feedback via a Slack message, delivering the feedback face to face (or at least via a Zoom video call) has a lot more weight.
