How to scale beyond ramen profitability?

You've built an MVP and product that people are paying real money for. Hooray!

What's the next step? How do you scale your business beyond your indie hacking self and co-founder?

It's likely the first time you hire a full time person. How can you convince people to come work for you?
How do you know you are hiring the right people?

Who do you hire first? I know everyone's first hire is engineering but for solo founders, did you hire an ops person or a virtual assistant?

How do you prepare for scale? What would happen if you 50x, 500x, 5000x your current sales volume?

Who do you go to for this advice?

Really good questions. In my experience, the jump from ramen profitability to actual scale usually comes down to identifying the one part of the business where reliability or process consistency breaks when you 10x or 50x activity. Once that constraint is clear, it becomes much easier to know whether the first meaningful hire should be engineering, ops, or something more hybrid. Curious what you found to be the biggest bottleneck when you thought through the 50x scenario.

In my experience, wait to get that first engineering hire. 1) they are expensive. 2) you probably can't hire the best, which isn't always needed, but it takes time to find the right hire.

I'd just go ahead and get a great operations person, or someone who can play the startup role of taking on different positions and doing a good/decent job at all of them. When you are getting a startup off the ground, new problems emerge constantly, and the team needs to consist of people who can shift to accommodate the needs of the business, regardless of what they may be. Most of the time, the changes needed aren't engineering based.

Hi @th3marine. Great points. Agree that a great ops person will help free up valuable founder time to focus on things only they can do (e.g. sell, figure out how to get more of their super customers, trigger repeat purchase, raise awareness of the business - drive topline revenue growth, ensuring new hires are challenged, getting ready to raise/raising). Imagine doing that 90% of the time, instead of invoicing, expenses, and all the tactical problems you mention. This is 100 times more important for solo founders! Need someone to ensure water is running through the pipes efficiently!

I'm also trying to figure this out. I recently hired an expert on https://arisedaily.io (grew to 10M ARR in 2 years) and she's helping me narrow down my target audience.

I'm realizing maybe I need to narrow down the target persona for community https://founderscafe.io . I can't decide if it's solo founders, founders fundraising, founders who've had a ton of community experience in the past, etc. etc. D: So hard to figure out the perfect persona. Think getting advice from people who've done it before will help, we'll see!

@gay yes! amazing what someone who has been in your shoes successfully multiple times sharing what made the difference to scale ARR can do. Cut through all the noise.
The value i get from the https://founderscafe.io community is a group of successful founders who already have revenue. Every time I ask a question, multiple people will respond with customized answers and options. Since everyone is pre-vetted, I know it's information I can trust from people who understand my position. And since its only founders - no investors or mentors - I can ask "dumb" questions freely and get the help I really need.
There is nothing more valuable than a Founder's time. If you can get info that will derisk a decision and prevent you from spending dozens of hours literally reinventing the wheel, you'll get there more efficiently and faster.

List all possible profiles (these above + 7 more)

      Answer this:

If you could only keep 1 out of these profiles in your community and never be open for anyone else, who would it be?

Hi @Denis_Shatalin! Thanks. I'm not sure I understand your question...
