How to succeed in building developer tooling
In the latest episode of the Software Engineering Unlocked podcast, I talk to Peter Pezaris, the CEO and co-founder of a start-up called CodeStream. CodeStream is a collaboration software for developers.
What’s interesting about Peter’s story is that CodeStream isn’t his first startup. CodeStream is one of the many companies Peter built. So, in this interview, I ask him about his 25 years-long journey building tech startups and what he has learned along the way.
So here are some of the key insights:
- Even though Peter started several startups, many are connected to the idea of improving communication and collaboration. So, he could take his knowledge and expertise from one startup to the next.
- Between all four startups, Peter kept his core-team intact. This allowed him to move much faster and have a functioning team.
- Even though Peter kept the same team, he rapidly changed the tech stack behind the software products. Even within the same product, Peter isn't afraid to re-write the software from scratch if needed.
- Peter describes looking for funding as a soul-destroying activity. But, after they managed to get into Y Combinator, the whole game changed. He said, having a YC badge made it much easier to raise money.
