Over the past year, I've been thinking a lot about eventually working for myself.
Not because I hate my job, I actually enjoy software engineering, but because I want to get to a point where work is a choice rather than a necessity.
Every time I'd think about freelancing, building a SaaS, or moving somewhere with a lower cost of living, I'd end up asking the same question:
"How much money do I actually need before I can make that move?"
I found plenty of cost-of-living calculators, retirement calculators, and FIRE calculators.
But none of them really answered the question I cared about.
So I spent this weekend building The Exit Plan.
Right now it's a simple calculator that estimates the income you'd need based on where you want to live and the lifestyle you want. Eventually, I'd like it to help answer bigger questions too:
What if I moved from London to Lisbon?
How far would my current salary go?
Could I realistically go freelance?
How much faster could I reach financial independence somewhere else?
It's still an MVP, and I'm deliberately trying not to over-engineer it.
At this stage, I'm much more interested in learning whether people actually find it useful than adding dozens of features.
If you've ever thought about quitting your job, moving abroad, or working for yourself, I'd genuinely love to know:
What information would help you feel confident making that decision?
I like that you're starting with a decision instead of a calculator.
People don't really want to know how much money they need—they want enough confidence to make a life change. If the product helps reduce that uncertainty, it's solving a much bigger problem than running the math.
