I dare you to #RoastMyApp

so, I created this: https://getseekr.xyz/

I'm using it, and several other people are using it too. And this is freaking great, as all my previous apps ended up locked in the basement.

Not telling you a thing about it – just get to the website, see if you get what it's for and whether you'd use it. Come back here and roast the app/website in the comments.

PS But seriously, thanks for spending your time to do it.

Your design looks cool but it's very unclear what your product does until you watch the video. If I were to describe your product in a sentence, I'd say: "Seekr is a smart search for your browser bookmarks" or "Seekr is a smart command line for your browser"

    1. 1

Ah, I love the line with "smart command line" for your browser! Thanks!

      1. 2

Glad you liked it! Just keep in mind that only programmers will get the term "command line". Other people may need a different approach.

Your product is very new and it's hard to understand what it does without your video. I'd suggest cutting your video into the sequence of 4-5 video illustrations that show your product. Then describe illustrations by placing a text block next to each video. It will help people understand your product without watching a long video.

And I don't really mind targetting it for programmers initially – I think they/we are the most demanding/power users, so it's good to test this thing out in the hardest env possible!

          1. 2

That's cool. Just wanted to make sure you were prepared for this :)

I tried to keep it as short as possible, but well, it turned out to be over a minute long.
I'm gathering some feedback, and it seems that it'd be best to just create a Loom video of me, and possibly my colleagues using it

          1. 1

You have 5-8 seconds to get attention of people who are just randomly browsing the web. If it's not clear how your product is going to change their life, they'll likely just leave the page.

Loom may be good, but making people watch any video just to understand what you're selling is going to affect your conversion.

            1. 2

Good point about the short time to grab the attention. Maybe I'll just make an animated illustration of the tool in action, and place it above the fold instead of the video (that one could potentially watch later).

Your intro video is short and to the point 👍🏼
Made me curious to try it.
I downloaded it and then saw that it doesn't have any of my bookmarks.
It's too much of a commitment to start adding manually all my bookmarks so I dropped it.
It could be nice if it would manually import my existing bookmark.

If I'm missed the point of the app please let me know and I'll give it another go.

    Good luck!!

    1. 1

Ah yes, the import feature – this is being worked on!
First, they were supposed to be added automatically, yet for a person with A LOT of them, it might become problematic pretty quickly!

Thanks for the feedback – really valuable as it highlights the possible points of commitment!

I'm not an "internet power user" but I do lean more technical. I think the intro video and splash page are really nicely designed! After watching the video a couple times, I feel the value proposition could be a little more front-and-center. In my opinion, in your case, you're convincing folks that downloading, learning, and using your tooling will "return" them time - above and beyond the browser shortcuts/hotkeys/extensions this audience may already know. Can you think of ways to really, really emphasize how much better your tooling makes web browsing?

    1. 2

downloading, learning, and using your tooling will "return" them time
      That's spot on.

Being technical here is both a blessing and a curse, as I can't zoom out, plus find it extremely difficult to pick the right words.

      1. 2

I'm just brainstorming, and I'm not the target customer, so take this thought with a huge grain of salt.

I wonder if there's some sort of "us vs. them" or side-by-side comparison of the speed of your tooling vs. without it? A way of saying, "hey, this tool makes you like 5x faster online."

That way, a user wouldn't need to see your demo, and then sort of "mentally calculate" that it'd take them longer to navigate without your product.

Just an idea for really calling out and emphasizing the navigability, saving clicks and scrolls, etc.

        1. 1

I'm starting to hear more and more that:

          1. Time/Speed is the main value for an individual
          2. Being able to share the thing is the main value for a team (+ it speeds things up)

          Thanks for your feedback, Andrew!

I get the idea. I use the vimium extension which is much more basic then your extension but is enough for me.

      Great! Thanks for the feedback!

I have to watch the video to understand the title: Create & manage links dashboards in your browser's new tab
