I've launched 7+ apps as a growth marketer. I've spent countless hours doing market research, identifying trends and opportunities in the space. AMA about mobile apps :)
What is your approach to start validating if an idea is worth being explored?
Do you always come to a successfull launching of your idea / the product you are trying to push?
What's special / different in the mobile niche?
Where do you look for / how do you identify trends?
Validating ideas, specifically for apps:
Create an image that you can use as a FB ad, ideally it does a good job at communicating your vision.
Create a logo, 3 store page screenshots, and a store description for your game/app. These should communicate what the game/app is about and why people should install it. It's a good idea to focus on key features, unique selling proposition, etc. Don't spend too much time on this, 80/20.
-Use these assets to build a simulated app store page, through a service like Storemaven.
Measure your ad campaign's performance, as well as the conversions on your simulated store page. This will give you an idea of what to expect before you even build the game/app.
Think about what it's costing you to acquire users and estimate what you'd have to make per user per day to offset those costs. This can give you some insight into what kind of content you might need, how long users will need to stay in your app for it to be profitable, and what kind of monetization you should explore.
Depending on your results, you might decide to tweak things and to run a second test with the goal of improving performance before deciding whether you want to pursue the idea.
I think this concept testing methodology can be used to validate most ideas, just adapt the tech stack you're using and assets you need.
Do you always come to a successful launching of your idea / the product you are trying to push?
Definitely not, I think probably 1/5 - 1/10 apps I've worked on become profitable.
What's special / different in the mobile niche?
Not sure what you're referring to?
Where do you look for / how do you identify trends?
News, competitors, industry reports, colleagues, data tools like Data.ai and/or GameRefinery. It's important to understand things like who your target market might be, what it might cost to acquire those users, how they monetize, etc.
IMO, Research gives you a guideline to work with, but you will never know for sure if something will work until you try.
