"I was skiing and I'd chosen the wrong track. I fell off a 15 meter cliff. Then I spent about 150, maybe 200 meters flying with my legs and hands in different directions. Just flying from the cliff, bouncing like a ball when I landed. The conditions were really dangerous, I was free riding somewhere in Kazakhstan on glaciers. I used extreme sports to take my mind off my stress. The accident was like a message from above, like, ‘Man, you just need to stop and think.’ About six months later I started seeing a therapist with my wife. Before, my wife and I were only talking about work. Her work problems. My work problems. Never personal things. I was neurotically checking my emails. Thinking that I was being productive, but I really wasn't. I was burning time. After just a few weeks of seeing a therapist, I stopped checking my phone obsessively and started to talk with my wife. We talked to each other about personal feelings and problems and it made our communication much easier and better. It also helped my business. I thought it would hurt it but it gave me a helicopter's perspective. I went from running three businesses to one. My focus is much better. We have a baby girl now too. I have enough time to spend with her. A lot has changed. And I'm always excited to come home now."
Thank you for sharing this story Igor. It really resonated with me for two reasons: I love skiing and adrenaline sports, and I also have been spending so much time with my significant other talking about work lately and it's not a good thing.
I'm definitely going to look into seeing a therapist of some kind. Just talking things out with an outsider can help a lot.
Glad you were able to figure things out and improve your relationship!
Tyrel, thank you! If you see and try to understand the problem, you're going to solve, it's the main thing (and a pre-requisite for any kind of therapist).
If you have any specific questions/thoughts/skiing plans to discuss, let's chat, fb.com/debatur
I'd love to chat sometime! I'll reach out now.
