Five months ago I hadn't touched a beaker since high school. Now I have the world's first at-home microplastics water testing kit. Patent pending. And it might be the most useful thing I've ever built.
My wife is pregnant. She purged our house of plastics and charged me with testing our drinking water. Cheapest lab test I could find was $598. I'm a software engineer — I figured there's a LOT of fat in that price.
So I dropped twenty academic papers into an AI conversation and said "explain this like I'm a software engineer who knows nothing about chemistry." I cross-referenced papers, bought equipment, ran the test. The AI was wrong a lot, but the loop felt familiar — ask, try, fail, ask again. Over a hundred attempts. And then one night I'm standing in my garage at 1am staring at microplastics glowing pink on a filter I prepared myself and thinking holy shit, this actually works.
That's vibe science. Same loop as vibe coding, except the output is physical and the moat is real — a patent-pending protocol, a growing geo-tagged water quality dataset, and regulatory tailwinds that no one can replicate over a weekend.
If everyone can build software now, software stops being a moat. Maybe the lesson is: if you really want attention, you're gonna have to do more interesting shit.
