Is anyone here a Martech technologist?

There is some variety in the skill sets and backgrounds of people in this community. Is anyone here whether it's as an employee or owner, a Martech technologist? If so, are you a software engineer or do you have a marketing/business background?

My last gig was running a data team for an advertising agency. We worked with all types of Martech in the process. What are you looking for?

I see the term Martech everywhere but I'm trying to understand what it means exactly. Is it the job that makes someone a Martech professional or is it the type of company that makes someone a Martech professional? For example, what if you did the same type of job at Pepsi instead of at an ad agency, would you say you work in the Martech space? Or no since your company sells sugar water?

Sorry for the delay. Hope this helps - but the real answer is still "it depends".

I think it depends on the function of your job and/or company. To me, Martech just means Marketing Technology that's usable at SCALE. Scale is really the key difference.

You don't work "in Martech" unless you're working for a company listed here https://martech5000.com/. An agency isn't "in Martech" unless they're offering technology (PMG, Merkle, Brainlabs) as well. Just because you work for a Martech company doesn't mean you're experienced with Martech though.

If you're working with external Martech vendors at Pepsi, you aren't working "in Martech" but you are "experienced with Martech". If you're outsourcing all of your marketing work to external agencies, you're not really touching Martech at all. If you're creating marketing technology (automation, algorithms, etc.) just for Pepsi, it isn't really Martech because it's only being used for a specific company.

So basically it's a category or type of technology that marketing people use to do marketing things with.

I have worked in leadership roles in martech companies. My background is in Machine learning but I am also comfortable in programming (and devops). When I started out, I did not have a broad marketing understanding but that has changed over the years.

I'm mainly trying to understand what Martech means exactly. If someone works in the Martech space, is it the skill set they have or is it what their employer sells? For example, are all the employees who work at Marketo or Salesforce, people who work in Martech? Or is the Director of Marketing at Kraft Foods, a person who works in Martech? Or a javascript developer that reports to the VP of Marketing at Kraft Foods, does that person work in Martech?

I was once a software tester, turned founder, turned community/marketing.

I see the term Martech all the time, so I'm trying to figure out if it's the role or the business that makes someone a person who works in the Martech space. If that makes any sense.

I'll be honest here, I didn't know what Martech meant. Based on your description I'm guessing marketing technology? I am a software engineer with no marketing background (probably obvious based on my first sentence :)) Sorry I don't think I'm going to be helpful to you.
