Is chrome extension a way to acquire users?

Hi everyone,

I'm building Tape - Threaded Video Messaging for Teams.
Although we built pretty much every feature without a chrome extension, I'm considering building a chrome extension for both 1) better functionality and 2) organic growth.

However, I'm not so sure how helpful it would be in terms of acquiring new users via the chrome extension store.

Any advice?

If it doesn't take too much efforts (like a week or two of coding time), I would definitely recommend building a chrome extension. At least for those two reasons:

    1. It will open up your project to many new users. There are like 2.65 billion users of Google Chrome. Being listed in the Chrome Webstore means that you can be accessible to a large part of this user base.
    2. It can boost your SEO strategy, as your chrome extension listing might rank better than your own website on some keywords.

So if it's low effort, go for it. But just take into consideration the maintenance cost :)

Thank you for sharing your opinion Corentin.

I wonder how many of 2.65 billion users are actually using any chrome extension but I guess it should be around or above 100 million at least. But it sounds big enough for my team to put 1-2 weeks like you said. Thanks again!

If your users asked for this feature over and over again, then sure. If not, then don’t build it ☺️
