Is there a tool that automatically picks the cheapest suitable model for each task?

been thinking about this lately — is there a tool where you just type what you want and it automatically picks the cheapest model that can handle it? like simple code goes to a fast cheap model, complex stuff goes to a stronger one, image requests go to an image model. all one input box, no switching manually.

anyone know if something like this already exists? would appreciate recs.

also curious how many people actually want this or if im just overthinking it.

    The last question is probably the more interesting part here.

    There’s a difference between people liking the idea of automatic model selection and actually feeling enough friction from choosing models themselves to want that decision removed.

      fair point. the friction isnt really 'too many clicks' — its that most users have no idea what model they need in the first place. my mom knows to use chatgpt but couldnt tell you the difference between flash and pro. auto routing removes a knowledge barrier, not just a click barrier.

      thats also why we kept manual mode — power users who know their models can override anytime. both exist, nobody's forced into anything
