Is trying to rank on Google a waste of time?

I have been trying to rank on Google now for the last six months and my site is still know where to be found in the Google search results.

Is trying to rank on Google these days a waste of time?

What has been your experience trying to Google to that your site exists?

I think it really depends on your goals. If you're trying to build a sustainable business, then ranking on Google is probably a good idea. But if you're just trying to get some quick traffic, then it might not be worth the effort.

Depends on what you're trying to achieve. I think it's less relevant for startups than traditional businesses. You wanna gain traffic and users early, you'll do outbound marketing and sales for early users even though their customer value will be low.

What we do now is we don't spend time optimizing the content but we take care of the technical parts of SEO. Most websites fail at good Google ranks because of the bad technicals, not the content.

Can you explain what technicals i need to focus on?

For example having a sitemap and a robot.txt generated, HTTPS instead of HTTP, etc. Using ahrefs or semrush - I prefer ahrefs - can point out technical issues that need to be resolved. Besides that images should be optimized for file size and resolution, they should have an alt text and don't forget about meta description for your website.

I'm not sure how you're going about this, but I reckon gaming the system is a waste of time. Here's how I got up the rankings for my app"

    1. Improved the product by talking to customers
    2. Wrote blog posts that I thought people would enjoy reading.
    3. Letting time pass

Do your blog posts need to be AMAZING from day one, or can you publish something and update it over time and thereby improve its ranking on Google?

I doubt they have to be amazing from day one, also it's really unlikely they'll be amazing from day one. Just try your best, and optimise for human readers instead of search engines.

I don't really update my old blog posts, I just add new ones.

Also the other thing is, when it comes to SEO, no one really knows what you should do aside from the search engineers at Google.

          I see. Thanks!

You're absolutely right, gaming the system is a waste of time. The best way to improve your rankings is by improving your product and making it the best it can be. Keep up the good work!

It's not a waste of time. That being said, you need to set time aside for this. The critical part is to find those search phrases where the content is poor and then write a better piece.

That's the best strategy to get to the top, but as mentioned, set time aside each week for this. And then use your Google Search Console. If you get a lot of impressions but no clicks. Then you need to make your headline more enticing.

Thank you for your advice! I will definitely set some time aside each week to work on this.
