how small businesses/indie hackers can do better when they're building something that is the main thing?
I'm curious to hear, is your business the main thing? I guess the follow up with that is... how is it going or is it working?
Nope! And I’ve had a difficult pivot to undergo because of it. This is such a great way to think about the problem your product solves. Wish I had learned this earlier 😅
Yeah, in some ways I'm kind of struggling with this idea. In most cases, the main thing seems to be in markets that are very crowded. Seems like those could be some dangerous places for bootstrappers.
I know what you mean. One way I'm looking at this is that we need to get good at finding new or underserved markets where there is room to come in with a new "main thing". You still need to differentiate in some way (cheapest/simplest/safest/self-hosted...est) but there you aren't trying to convince customers to pay for your side-dish when why have already paid for the main-thing.
There are a ton of nuances/caveats to this but I still think it should be the default to go for main-thing.
