I used to run an image sharing community with millions of users. I hope you realize the risks involved in running an anything goes image hosting service. First off, make sure you're registered in the DMCA directory and follow take-down procedures correctly or it's only a matter of time before you get sued (I made this mistake and luckily it only cost me a couple grand). Secondly, you need some guidelines. If you service becomes popular you will at some point have to deal with illegal material, like child porn. Best of luck!
Good to hear from someone that's "been there". I'm curious if there's anything you did that circumvented these kinds of problems. I have a website hosting product and I'm always worried someone will put up something nefarious - even though we dont have many users it only takes one "bad guy" to find it. So far I've just made it harder by having people have to sign up before uploading things (it's all locally stored before that) since a friend had a similar problem. Any other tips you could share?
My thoughts exactly. I am writing software for easy sharing of image galleries with family and friends, and also software for archiving photo collections (as in, scanned old photos). I thought about releasing both to the public, as it's something many people need. But then I realized that this kind of software will immediately be used for purposes that terrify me by people that I want nothing to do with. Apart from legal risks, I never ever want to be involved or facilitate such purposes.
It's sad, really, but that's the world we live in.
I tried to upload a photo from my phone but it said it’s too big?
With Dropzone (which it seems you’re using) you could resize the image so it’s always a manageable size.
I’m the dev behind FilePond a file uploading library (free MIT) which can do this as well. You could even add image editing with Doka.
