Entrepreneurial ventures I’ve failed at:
• A machine learning platform startup
• A research-as-a-service startup
• An action sports app startup
• An eBay resellers business
• A crypto trading startup
• A journal abstract app
• Trading analytics app
• A used car business
• Venture investing
• Selling ads
• Blogging
Entrepreneurial ventures I’ve succeeded at:
• Real estate investing
• Venture investing
• Trade Blotter app
• Content creating
• Startup advising
• Options trading
I’ve failed more times than I’ve succeeded.
I poured untold amounts of time, money, and attention into these failures.
Despite that, I rolled what I learned into the next thing and kept going.
And you know what?
I started winning.
And some of my failures turned into successes.
So if you’re not feeling the momentum or things are not going your way, there is good news:
You can be successful.
Just keep going, keep building on your failures and keep showing up every day.
Thanks for your encouragement. What is the time frame from when you initially started created businesses to when you started winning?
I don't have a great answer in terms of time. What I've learned the most through the failures is to know when you've failed. Time is a luxury and there is real opportunity cost to working projects. I realized after the machine learning startup failed, there was no evidence to support the hypothesis I had for starting the business. I should have been more sensitive to that and should have considered folding it up sooner.
So if there's any advice, it is to form a hypothesis before you start a business. Constantly assess the evidence you get from the market. If there is no evidence to support your hypothesis, quit.
Great post to see here. Congrats on the successes!
