🚀 Launched DevConfessions – Anonymous confessions for developers (and how I built it)

Hey IH community!

After months of side-project work, I finally launched DevConfessions – an anonymous confession platform built specifically for developers.

The Problem
Developers share wins constantly but hide failures. This creates a warped sense of what software development actually looks like. I wanted to build a space for the OTHER stories.

The Solution
DevConfessions lets anyone post anonymous confessions across 8 categories:

No login required. No ads. No tracking.

Build Process
Timeline: ~3 months of evenings and weekends
Stack: Ionic React + PHP/MySQL
Cost: ~Low cost hosting on shared cPanel

I intentionally chose boring, proven tech. No TypeScript, no GraphQL, no fancy infrastructure. Just the simplest thing that could work.

Launch Strategy
Soft launched to friends for feedback
Posted on relevant subreddits (r/SideProject got decent traction)
Submitted to Google Play Store (approved in ~3 days)
Now posting here and planning Product Hunt
What's Working
✅ The categories resonate-people find one that fits their experience
✅ Zero-friction posting-no signup means people actually post
✅ Dark theme-developers love it
✅ Mobile app feels native despite being hybrid

What's Not Working
❌ Discovery is hard-SEO takes time, no viral mechanics built in
❌ Content volume varies by category-some feel sparse
❌ No iOS app yet-budget constraint

Revenue/Monetization
Currently $0. The platform is a passion project. I'm not running ads (ever), but I might add a "buy me a coffee" option if it grows.

Long-term, I could see a very light sponsorship model or a premium "corporate confession" category for workplace stories. But profitability isn't the primary goal.

What I'd Do Differently
Built in public earlier-would have gotten feedback sooner
Focused on one platform first (mobile OR web, not both simultaneously)
Shipped even faster with fewer features
Community Question
For those who've launched anonymous or community platforms: how did you handle content moderation without burning out? Currently relying on rate limits + community upvotes, but curious about other approaches.
