Lessons from launch week

After nearly a year of working on the project in my free time, Collab Spot has finally launched! Collab Spot is a tool that allows team to collect feedback and iterate designs 5x faster on any website. With it, you can turn any website into an interactive canvas where your entire team can leave comments, create and assign tasks, and visually edit the design. To put it simply: Collab Spot does for website editing what Google Docs did for document editing.

On Tuesday, August 2nd, Collab Spot was introduced to the world via our Product Hunt launch. While this didn't result in a massive influx of users, it did give us our first pieces of critical feedback that will allow us to make Collab Spot better for everybody. The first thing we are revising: pricing.

The initial launch had a fairly minimal free tier that would allow users to create a sample product, but placed limits on the ability to leave comments on inspect the website. The new free tier is far more broad: it allows users to have 3 active projects at once, invite unlimited collaborators to join them, and enables the ability to leave as many comments on your website as you like.

This preserves the collaborative experience on the free tier, while also providing a strong incentive to try out Collab Spot's paid plans, which unlock features such as the creation of to-do lists and the ability to visually edit your website (which automatically generates code on the fly for rapid implementation). We are going to continue to build out the free tier and add powerful new features as they continue to be requested.

The second thing we tackled was clarifying what our product actually was. For instance, some users associated our platform with website creation software such as SquareSpace. Collab Spot, as a tool for collecting feedback and editing designs, is more akin to a combination of Google Docs and Figma for the web. So, our new landing page clarifies the features, as well as covers use cases to let teams know where value is delivered.

What are some lessons that you learned when first launching your company? If you could go back in time, would you change anything about your approach?

I think that's the thing... Not matter how prepared you are (or think you are) there are still probably areas you can change and improve upon. At some point you have to just go for it else you'll never move forward.

And as you say, you've received some valuable feedback which will help you further improve and strengthen your product.

Everyone wants to do well and have a big Product Hunt launch, but there will always be more opportunities. The main part is you learn, grow and adapt.

Absolutely. I agree that learning and growing from the feedback we receive is the most important thing! I plan on iterating Collab Spot based on feedback and attempting another launch when significant improvements have been made.

Did you investigate further if they were willing to pay for that functionality? it looks like it has potential as independent product.

    Congrats on your launch!

I've actually curated an Airtable of different growth strategies from Indie founders.

I believe you can find some strategies under "Pre-launch" and "Monetization" of inspiring stories from other indie founders on how they've launched or converted free users to paid etc.

You can download it for free. Cheers and all the best!
