I would just go to the Rails issue tracker and grab whichever issue you fancy and try to work on it: https://github.com/rails/rails/issues

Even if all you get to add to the issue is "I tried it under these conditions and I couldn't reproduce it." that's valuable.

The reason why I recommend Rails (or Django, or any of the major frameworks) is that working on issues there will give you good contacts with people in the community and look impressive on your CV as well as help a lot of people because those frameworks get used by a lot of people.

When I'm hiring developers, having actively contributed to Rails or Django gives you major points because then I know that you are not at the mercy of your tools but can improve your tools to solve a problem.

Don't take it wrong, but you should be driven by your own needs. If some apps you use is broken or miss a feature, go for it. The need is the most powerful motivation you'll have to complete a FOSS contribution. You'll overachieve to fulfill your needs, instead of not really being efficient trying to work on projects you don't even use. My 2cent
