Marketing tips for a newbie indie hacker?

Hello There πŸ‘‹πŸ»

This is my first post here, thanks @csallen for this amazing community πŸŽ‰πŸ€—

I decided to start building a productivity app about daily tracking of your goals, building positive habits as well as getting rid of bad ones. It's a problem I personally struggled with for many years and still do (getting better!). And I figured I might do some initial design mockups to put in the landing page and run an early access program and have users enter their emails and then continue to roll out features of the app for them to work with and test until I have a fully working app for public launch.

Now as someone who have never done marketing, what do you advise me (and other newbies like me) to do? What are some practical tips/resources/books... you might recommend to start talking to customers, and getting the word out there, etc?

Thanks a lot! πŸ€—β€οΈ

Twitter is actually a very effective marketing tool but you need to build yourself an audience first. Once, I shared a tweet on how I get my product https://oneprofile.info to #1 product of the day on Product Hunt and that tweet generated over 200k impressions and got me over 1000 signups and 15 customers.

    Here's the tweet: https://twitter.com/yusuf_giftworks/status/1234694242586415104

    Hope it helps!

Having an initial audience is GOAT. I built a meal planning tool for a client who has 800k followers on youtube. They did a private beta and generated $40k (on subscription) in the first month. No paid ADS or anything - a private beta.

Easier said than done. Figure out ways to build an audience for sure. Youll realize that its similar to marketing the product directly. YOU NEED TO KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE and be niche focused at first.

Agree wholeheartedly. If you have massive audience β€”in other words, fansβ€”your journey to profitability will be almost instantaneous. Just build a subscription business and they'll flock to you overnight. But gaining fans/audience is really difficult.

Hey @iamanas22 productivity tracking app is a very competitive market and there are a lot of existing tools/apps in the market but that's actually a good sign because it shows the demand for such apps. Below are a few ideas to start off with

    1. "Do things that don't scale" - target potential users individually and engage in a conversation with them and explain about the app. Reading Paul Graham's Do things that don't scale will take about 5 mins and will give you valuable advice about starting marketing http://paulgraham.com/ds.html

    2. Target niche groups. Everyone wants to build good habits but only a few actually follow through. Ideally, you want users who use your app consistently rather than just install, use once and then forget about it. You will find niche productivity or good habit groups on Facebook, Reddit and few online forums. Join these forums, start engaging with the community and explain about your app. You are likely to receive better feedback and more users for your app.

3.Thought about this idea just now. How about teaming up with local Yoga centres or gyms to launch a co-sponsored productivity app? Users who go for Yoga or gym are people who want to build a good habit and are in the process of doing it so the app will be an additional benefit for them. You can talk to yoga centres and gyms to advertise the app to their users and negotiate a suitable partnership with these businesses.

    Hope this helps :)

I'm definitely reading Paul's article! Yeah identifying the right and narrowed audience is key, and then identify where they are. Extremely helpful thank you!

I think that starting a blog is always a good choice. This will build up followers to your product and increase SEO rank.

Sure thing, will get to do that too! Thank you very much!

Indeed, well I do genuinely struggle with habits, and it's absolutely true that habits are one of the big pillars of success, so hopefully this app helps me, but most importantly, helps many people achieving their goals and sticking to good positive habits. Thank you bro. πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ€—
