Meet the Woman Making AI That Adapts to You 🤖
Mira Murati came from an engineering background, studying mechanical engineering, working in aerospace and technology, before moving into product and artificial intelligence. She joined OpenAI and worked on some of the most important AI products of the modern era — ChatGPT, DALL-E, Codex — eventually becoming CTO.
AI was becoming incredibly capable, yet people were still struggling to understand it, customize it, control it, and make it fit their own way of working. The technology was advancing faster than the interface connecting humans to it.
People don't all work the same way. Scientists, engineers, designers, musicians, businesses — each has different knowledge, different workflows, different goals. Murati wanted AI that could adapt to people directly (this framing is basically the whole thesis of her second act lol).
After leaving OpenAI, she founded Thinking Machines Lab, a new AI research and product company focused on making AI more understandable, customizable, and collaborative. The philosophy centered on building systems that work alongside people through conversation, vision, multimodal interaction, and deeper collaboration. 🧠
The company pulled together an extraordinary team of AI researchers, followed by a $2 billion seed round at a $10 billion valuation. Then in March 2026, Thinking Machines Lab announced a major NVIDIA partnership involving at least one gigawatt of next-generation Vera Rubin computing infrastructure.
The scale was enormous.
The underlying idea stayed simple: make AI more useful to the person actually using it.
