Milestones are motivators.

The moment you sign up your first customer and get your first payment, everything feels real.

I still remember my first cheque – when cheques were still commonplace in the UK – $50 from WIRED magazine for a short article I‘d written (in ~1998).

That first payment felt like validation: I was ‘officially’ a writer.

Nothing beats that feeling. Of course, everything is just as real before you reach that moment of validation, but it’s a special moment, nonetheless.

When you hit that first payment – $10, for example – set another goal: $100; and another: $1,000. Every time you hit a subsequent goal, set a new goal that’s increased by a factor of ten.

  • $10
  • $100
  • $1,000
  • $10,000
  • $100,000
  • $1,000,000

By the time you hit your sixth goal, you’ll be a millionaire.

Your milestones help you to focus, enabling you to set goals to measure against and measure towards. Nothing beats the feeling of reaching those goals and, when you reach them, continuing to stretch yourself pushes you further.

Good luck on your journey.
