Mobile First vs Desktop First Dashboards

The whole internet is moving to this "mobile first" paradigm but one place where it just really doesn't translate well is when you're building a dashboard like a marketing or sales dashboard.

I feel like effectively you end up having to do two designs completely from scratch with perhaps the mobile version having reduced functionality but this is a bit sucky in the "mobile first" world we're in.

Does anyone have any guidance around how to deal with this or is the thought process that we're safe creating "desktop first" for dashboards because it's more likely to be a desktop based user?
