My side project just got its first signups from ChatGPT here's the exact setup that made it happen

I built a directory where indie projects get structured so AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini) can actually cite them when users ask questions.

Today I checked the admin panel and saw something wild: new projects registering with "via ChatGPT" as their referral source. People are finding the directory because an AI recommended it to them.

Here's what I did — no ads, no paid promotion:

1. Structured every listing for machines, not just humans.
Each project profile carries schema.org markup, FAQPage JSON-LD, and an llms.txt file. AI engines can parse it without guessing.

2. Built an "Intent Map" feature.
Project owners write the exact questions people ask AI about their niche. Those Q&A pairs get embedded as structured data — so when someone asks ChatGPT "what's a good tool for X?", the answer has something real to cite.

3. Cross-referenced across platforms.
The directory (identity layer) + a short-form content platform (content layer) corroborate each other. More independent sources = higher AI confidence = more citations.

The result so far (10 days live):

  • 174 users, growing daily

  • Signups coming from Google Search, ChatGPT, YouTube, GitHub, Reddit, Perplexity

  • Zero ad spend

The wildest part: I'm not optimizing for Google rankings — I'm optimizing for AI answer rankings. Traditional SEO is one channel; Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the next one. And it's already sending real users.

If you want your project listed (free), it's called CitableHub — every listing gets a citability score out of 100 and the structured data to back it up.

Happy to answer any questions about the technical setup or the GEO strategy. 🚀
