What I don't like about their solution is that you have to offer direct access to the DB. I'd prefer a webhook solution, where my backend produces the json data.

We are also looking to build something on APIs, where users would be able to query the APIs and build dashboards/set alerts.

Great job on the presentation, it very clearly defined the problem and solution.
I use Metabase for this today and I am very happy with it. It has a robust visual interface for building queries or I can write raw SQL. I can schedule them to email me and it has awesome Slack integration.
It’s also open source and completely free so I host it myself on an inexpensive VM.
I know about Metabase, but Metabase has decent setup complexity. From installing the open source edition and then managing the alerts.
The whole idea is to make it really easy for users who knows SQL should be able to do the whole dashboards/ lists/ setting up alerts and send the same to various other applications like inbox / slack or some other application
