New Substack - 606 views, 23 subscribers in 28 days, is it bad/ok?

https://freshsalmon.substack.com/

Hey All, I finally launched a new substack on July 17th. I have written 6 posts, and it's very slowly growing.

I feel a little depressed with the pace of growth. Am I growing too slow?

It's not bad at all! In fact, it's quite good! Keep up the good work and you'll continue to grow your subscriber base.

      Thanks Alex, appreciate it.

Seems really good. How often do you write?

    1. 1

Weekly at the moment. I have committed to publish a new edition at least once a week. In 4 weeks, I have been able to publish 6 editions, so I feel, I am on the right track.

I launched my newsletter CategorySufers.com about a week ago and got to about 70 subscribers (but about 20 were from my close network, and I plan to tap into further next work after about 10 issues).

don't get discouraged. keep pushing. But remember to experiment. You need to be able to answer the question of why some should signup and how should do it.

      Thanks @sailorstan. Much appreciated man.
Things did change since I posted it. I am now at 115 subscribers. I have written 3 more posts since then, but all the traction came from the new content that I published on Aug 23rd. It's just over 3300 views now.

It's too early to lose motivation. I've been writing my newsletter for the last two weeks consistently and I'm starting to notice that subscribers grow very slowly on substack. https://aaban.substack.com/ You can check out mine.

      Congratulations @samyakr. Looks good.
How many times a week are you publishing?
      How many subs. you have?

      1. 2

I'm publishing every week on sunday. I have 150 subs right now.

If you want to grow there is also an option to cross-promote with newsletters you know. I think sample.ai is a good platform for that. Let me know if it helps

@samyakr - Sample domain is parked.

Nice. I will check out Sample, thanks.

Let's pretend that this isn't a newsletter, and it's a blog instead (which, I mean, it is... but just change your perspective).

For a brand-new blog. This is pretty solid, especially as you find your voice. Also, blogging/writing is a long game. I think you should assess how things are going at 6mo then at 1yr. At that point, you pivot your value proposition if necessary.

Hi Justin, thanks for your comments. This is great explanation, and totally make sense. Also, makes me feel better :)

But you are spot-on, it's a long game. And checkpoints at 6mo and 1yr marks would be more meaningful.

Btw, happen to check GapScout - very interesting. There is a huge gap in market research and competitive intelligence areas. You are certainly on something.

Happy to help :) and thanks for the kind words!

          🙌 Thanks again.

Rome wasn't built in two days either...

That's a good reminder, Michael. Thanks.

It's not bad. I wanted to ask you if how you're promoting the Substack.

And are you making it easy for people to share the newsletter/are you making shareable content?

    1. 2

Btw, just saw you have been consistently writing for a long. Kudos!!

Do you mind sharing your journey a bit and how many subscribers you are at?

        1. 1

Congratulations man, the first 1000 is hard.

      Thanks Kavir. Appreciate your comment.

My no. 1 focus is to publish "valuable content", not just posting it for the sake of posting it. I also believe the content that's valuable is shared by people, therefore, I am not taking extra steps to make it easily shareable. My newsletter is hosted on Substack, and I am relying on those features that it offers.

Every time I post, I am primarily promoting the new post on following places:

      • Twitter
      • Linkedin (on my feed and providing link in comments when relevant to someone else's post)
      • Indiehacker
      • Hacker News
      • Instagram (for friends and family - I have a private account)

This week, I printed a T-Shirt with Fresh Salmon branding, I am planning to run a referral program with a giveaway for people in US in the coming days to boost the subscriptions.

The Open Rate currently stands over 60% with the few subscribers that I have.
      Hope it helps.

Just to clarify, Substack is a side project, and I have committed to publish valuable content at least once a week. In 4 weeks, I have been able to publish 6 editions, so I feel, I am getting the knack of it.
