What kind of validation do you do before starting a newsletter?
I'm thinking of starting one but want to make sure there's some demand for it before starting to write it. Has anyone setup a landing page to test out a potential newsletter? Or do you recommend just starting it and see if it sticks?
So many reasons to start a newsletter.
Usually I've started newsletters because I was building something else, and needed validation for that.
So this is, Not really: if you build it they will come...
I'd say if you don't build it, nobody will come.
NO way to validate if you don't try.
Write 5 editions for yourself. Send them to friends and confidantes, and colleagues.
Iterate.
Launch with 5 editions and something for people to see.
Go directly to your potential audience. I usually start with 5-10 people and see if any common patterns. @marz0
I've been doing this week by week to gather feedback for my newsletter, every 2 weeks I will implement a new update.
Put up a landing page and reach out to your ideal subscribers.
Give yourself a target (say 50 subs in a week) and go for it. If you hit the number start writing. If not, rethink it.
As everybody wrote, you just start and acquire first readers and that will be the best validation.
@AndrewKamphey is 104% spot on.
Just start, very litle effort is required for a newsletter MVP newsletter, especially compared with more complex products such as SaaS. It's what I did with my newsletter, I just went with a hunch and my passion for the topic I cover.
Research your niche and see if people are already consuming info on the topic.
For example, do blogs and subreddits already exist for that niche? Is it discussed on Twitter? Are people searching for it on Google?
I think starting it, getting some early subscribers, and then seeing the results and reaching out to them for feedback is the best way to really see if there's appetite.
