Nicheless
It’s hard to be yourself when you’re the “x” man or woman.
Don’t get me wrong, I follow people on Twitter that talk about one thing and one thing only. I follow them specifically to keep up with the latest news, trends, etc. in their domain of expertise.
That’s never been what I’ve been interested in doing myself.
I would get tired of and bored from talking about the same topics over and over again. I love learning and sharing about so many different things and accept that it’s not the fasted way to “grow an audience”.
If I were a full-time creator, I might consider a different approach, but for now, I just want to be a curious person and share my interests and learnings with the world.
One important thing to note is that I have nothing to sell and so it’s easier for me to live life without a niche and simply be myself.
Not having a niche doesn’t mean you can publish mediocore content. On the contrary… your newsletter, blog, or twitter threads have to be great in order to cut through the noise.
This isn’t a free pass to overthink and edit your writing to death though… it simply means you should lower your expectations for fast growth.
Going nicheless is a long-term game.
I hear you. I, too, feel the same. "I am so much more than this little part of my life." Definitely. I am not only a "marketing guy". Sure. There is a whole lot of me outside of that. I am a husband. I am a father. I am interested in esotericism and comparative religion. I am a gamer with a specific interest in tabletop games, both design and play.
But...
If you are planning to leverage your following for any specific endeavours of yours, it won't play well with that. First and foremost because your audience will also have diverse interests. Meaning anything you post for any specific one will be only engaged by a small part of it, therefore penalized by algorithms.
It is something to keep in mind. You know. For future.
I agree. This is a conscious decision for me though. I know it would be much easier to get attention if I talked about Crypto all day every day, but I would get bored and quit before I truly gained any of the benefits of niching down.
Than maybe, as a possibility, keep in mind that you might want to focus on something else? If you are not passionate about the domain you are focusing on, it will be so much hard. If it doesn't "bring joy" to your life, than why bother?
