The task for today's New Year Stoic challenge is to identify and break a destructive thought pattern and break it.
I am a very positive person. I have learned to turn my negative thoughts into positive motivations. I realize, however, I do have a destructive thought pattern that I thought was a good thing.
Just like the "3 things" challenge from 3 days ago, I tried to focus on what I could do best. There are so many things I want to learn or do, but I have to be realistic. For example, I have very little musical talent, despite the fact that I really love music. So I realized that I couldn't focus on it as a career.
And in my entrepreneurship journey, I realized that I could never be "as good as" certain engineers. And I compensate that by hiring those who are better than me getting them on my team.
But this "not as good as" mentality could be a destructive thought pattern that limited my potential. For example, when there are great programmers on my team who are experts in certain areas, I still could spend efforts to learn and become better in those categories. Maybe it's my competitive character--I strive to be the best always and give up on things that others are better than me--so I always pick the niche that I have an unfair advantage over others. That is perfectly fine if it's for entrepreneurship. But it's limiting my potential as a person or employee in learning.
