Elaine Thompson-Herah, the Olympic gold medalist sprinter for the 100 and 200m in Tokyo, had her Instagram temporarily blocked.
If a public figure can get her social media account blocked, definitely so can you 🤷
She is fortunate to be able to pull strings to get her account back quickly, but what about the majority of us ordinary citizens? 🥶
You could unknowingly post something against the rules of the platform, or someone could hack your account and post malicious posts.
And the next thing you know... your account no longer exists 😨
You lose thousands of followers you've built so hard over the years.
Instead of solely relying on social media as a distribution channel, build your own database of fans by getting their email address 📩
So that when shit hits the fan, you can still contact them and your business doesn't die overnight.
❌ You don't own your followers on social media platforms. The platforms do.
✅ If you have your own database of email addresses, you can always take it anywhere with you.
Even if an email marketing tool were to close your account, you can switch to another tool.
Your fan/customer database is the most important asset, not social media followers which could be wiped out overnight.
Have you started to build your own list of fans & customers?
This is damn true.
Ideally we should never build on closed/centralized platforms or protocols.
That includes having a YouTube channel, TikTok, Twitter, etc.
Sadly 99% of people don't care about open/closed protocols; they care about content and convenience.
Social platforms have their place because our target audience are already there. The key is to capture a segment of the audience from these platforms and funnel them to our own database of contacts.
I agree.
Some way or another, we need to be capturing their email addresses.
But it's soo convenient to use these platforms...
It's totally fine to leverage these platforms to build a brand and following. You just need to make sure a portion of these folks opt-in to your email list.
