Personality vs business-like

I'm getting some feedback, both here on IH and through other channels, that my current brand personality at https://receiptrunner.com/ is too fluffy, "project-like" and not serious enough.

In particular, some people critique the use of:

  • buttons that throw money or receipts out of them when clicked
  • the use of "I"-form instead of "we" and focus on me as the creator

Seth Godin and others like him always talk about being weird and standing out as a plus, and that by having a clear personality the business can differentiate on that personality alone.

However, if the personality of Receipt Runner is scaring many customers away, perhaps it should be toned down or tweaked a little?

What's your take? Can it be too quirky, and is it too quirky now?

Who has given you the feedback?

If it is people who are not, nor would ever be your customer, ignore it.

Go find 10 people you think should buy it. Ask them to buy it. If they don't ask them why. Then make those changes.

Don't listen to the random feedback from random people. Good luck!

@DanielJackson - I don't mind the "Made for Haters, by a hater", but that message gets lost easily because you don't lead with something that answers the question "what does that title mean?"

    Maybe a slight reword like:

Made for haters, by a hater

Whoa, I really hate collecting receipts!

Hi, my name is Daniel 👋, the creator of Receipt Runner.

If you hate collecting receipts, as much as most of us do, you'll likely fall in LOVE with this app.

The end goal is to get rid of the hassle of all receipts, not just for email.

If you have any tips hit me up at daniel@receiptrunner.com, or open the chat.

Thanks, I like this feedback :)

I dont think the site is too quirky- in actual fact the use of the blue colour to me makes it look fairly conservative (blue is a "banky" colour). However, trust is critical with bank transactions as someone else pointed out..., so a few things i think could improve this is - 1) your logo looks a little old school- something cleaner and more modern would look more professional...and secondly, on your privacy page...the first phrase "To the greatest extent possible"- screamed alarm bells to me- i would try and reword or remove that bit... Hope this helps

The trust thing is really key, I think. What would you need to see to make sure you trusted the app?

Thanks for the feedback - will adjust the wording.

A new logo is in the works, but I'm not putting too much effort into it until I get some more solid feedback.

    Nah, I think it's ok.

If ANYTHING (and trying to be super critical)

    1. The logo doesn't quite match the style.
    1. The bills exploding when you press the button.
    • I was like hm ok.. what's that for?
    1. The ending: Haters by hater... want to grab a beer?
    • I would prefer something positive: Made for time savers by time saver... (or something like that, "I love saving every bit of time when doing tedious work and I thought, hey I can help people" yada yada)

And the "grab a beer" it's cool but it's also like.. .hm are you handling my money properly?

Again, nothing of this would deter me of using the service. I was just forcing myself to find something to mention.

Keep it going man! You might (eventually) try some A/B testing to see what people react better to.

Thanks! I'm removing the grab a beer thing, as it's not too relevant either.

That definitely sounds like a good idea.

In the US there's the Geico insurance that has a Gecko doing all kind of silly stuff in the ads. The important part here I think is the silliness is on the mascot and not in the whole company image I suppose.

Thanks! I guess I asked a leading question, but happy to get the answer I wanted 😂

The Meerkat case is a good one, I think.

What do you think about We vs I-form?
