Hello,
I faced with some issues with Notion. When I need to import something into the database, built in CSV Import gives unpredictable result sometimes, and it may break the existing data. I failed several times and wasted a lot of time for fixing it back.
And, I decided to find a visual tool for managing fields mapping and providing some validation tips before inserting the data. I found several, not for Notion specially. However, it may be used with Notion via 3rd integrations tools.
Such tools look a bit nerdy and complex, and not always are enough clear how to use. So, I decided to do my own solution.
Is it something that you probably would use? And would pay?
How can I validate this idea more widely before wasting time for something that only I need?
I will appreciate any advices.
If you are not sure about if building the tool is the right thing, don't ask if people would pay. They are very likely to be friendly and just lie "sure, this is a great idea".
Instead, here's what I usually do:
I created a tool to streamline that process. Validate is an easy-to-use toolkit that helps you to quickly create a professional landing page and start collecting email addresses from interested customers. It handles almost everything (including hosting, SSL, no domain needed, email signups, email sending) and has an in-app copywriting guide if you need a bit of help.
But of couse I may be a bit biased, you can of course use any other tool or create everything yourself. Validate just helps you minimize the time and money you have to put into the project before seeing results + is purpose-bound to validating an idea.
Anyways, after you've got your page ready, you have to drive traffic to it. The easiest way is ads. You can spend a bit of money to test the idea. You can also engage in relevant forums and help people and explain the typcial problems with notion's CSV import and then also drop the link if you think it can help the person.
If you see no signups or just very few, you know that the idea is not really ready to be build. Either you need to pivot quite a bit or choose an entirely different idea.
Thank you for advices. A problem exists, definitely, but maybe it is a problem only for me, I don't know. Way with automation email after waitlist is brilliant! I need to try such approach, not only for this project, but for others too. Your tool look promising to try!
You're welcome :)
It sounds like this is a pretty challenging niche. My first inclination is to ask is there a way to broaden your focus outside of just a Notion plugin? Otherwise you're trying to target just a subset of Notion users who have this problem, and Notion could always solve the issue themselves cutting out your business overnight.
Indeed. I agree with too tiny niche. At the same time, they also may acquire my solution, as they did it with Cron.
