Hello, podcasters!
The best way for me to explain this question is with an example.
Joe Rogan has the Joe Rogan Experience as his podcast but also started the JRE MMA Show. The MMA Show episodes aren't posted as an entirely new podcast. Till today the episodes on Spotify still fall under the main JRE podcast.
So my question for the podcasters out there is whether you believe it's a good idea to follow this format of creating the main podcast and then having "special segment episodes" that fall under the same podcast but have a different naming convention.
Or do you believe you should just create an entirely new podcast with a different name and everything?
Hoping this sparks a bit of conversation and I'm curious to hear your opinions.
For context, I started a podcast focussed on Django development but I've been thinking of doing my own personal podcast. I don't see the point in having two podcasts so I thought maybe I should just do the Django conversations as a segment of the main show.
I would suggest putting everything under your own names with different titles. I'm a host of two podcasts but in two languages.
I think the podcast market is already saturated so people don't have much attention to follow the newly created podcast unless you are Joe Rogan!
My tip is if anything can last for a long time in a consistent way, just do it. In your case, your personal brand will hang in a long term rather than specific topics.
I currently have 10,000+ subscribers on The CJ Show podcast focus on culture observation and philosophy. I occasionally invite guests to join and title the episode as Special Conversation with XXX.
Hope it makes sense and all the best.
This makes a lot of sense. I agree that being consistent with it is the best way to go. Thanks for sharing!
I would say that if these separate topics are being published at the same time (meaning both are active podcasts releasing new episodes), make it easier for your subscribers and use two separate podcast feeds. I'm not sure all subscribers would necessarily want both types of contents.
Many podcast hosts actually offer unlimited "podcasts" (shows) so you can create more than one without much of an overhead.
If you are done with one subject, and want to move on to another direction, you can use a separate season tag to better separate between the two topics.
At the end of the day, it's totally up to you, if you think the personal podcast can add relevant context to the Django podcast (or vice versa), then go for it!
I guess my bottom line is that it's not too hard to create a brand new show, and it's always a good idea to have those separated in case one of the two suddenly picks up more attention, you want to sell/retire/double up on one, or you want to take one of the two to another direction that is not relevant enough.
We recently added a new feature on Podcastpage that enables multiple podcasts on one site, and we see that some users prefer to have a better separation between podcasts when possible rather than having all episodes under the same show.
Thanks for sharing this. I appreciate the feedback!
