Popularity Contest?

It seems to me that Silicon Valley and tech startups in general were a place for often-introverted folks to shine within a meritocracy where it was all about the best idea. It felt like it was an opportunity for overlooked people to make their mark.

Has social media changed that?

Is it still about the best idea or is it more about being the most affable, outspoken, content-producing founder with the most followers? Or is it a combination of these things?

I am not sure where I stand on this so I wanted to see what other people think.

What do you think?

both. you need to build and tell others that you've built something.

    ... as it should be.

I agree, but I think there's a time component as well. The early success/traction etc is mostly a popularity contest which is unsurprising, when people don't know you they judge you by superficial bullshit, what can you expect? But I do believe that long term good ideas tend to win. My strategy is slow and steady wins the race. Promote, sure, keep people posted on what you're doing steadily over the years, but focus on making something great.
