It's been a tumultuous last 20 months. The mental health impact has been huge.
Maybe you've read about The Great Resignation. Or maybe you've experienced it yourself while trying to balance a day job with a side project.
Here's my comment and question for the community. It seems like now more than ever there's a need to provide features and entire products that can further help people de-stress their lives.
What do you all think? Do you factor this in to the projects you work on?
I'm not talking about building another meditation app like Calm or Headspace. There are too many in the general population who just aren't ever going to get into "mindfulness" and meditation habits.
I'm also not talking about building more games or apps that offer temporary diversions, though both of those have their place, too.
I'm talking about a resurgence in the principles of calm technology.
What if we built more apps and features into existing apps that don't require users' constant attention, in the form of uneditable notifications and behavior-based emails, beckoning users and customers to come right back into the app.
No more endless infinite scrolling or other built-in functionality that demands attention and distracts people from being real humans.
Instead, we build purposeful apps and features that allow people to get in, get something done, and move on. Or easy-to-configure, lightweight automations where people can simplify how they use a piece of software without stressing out over the setup process alone.
I'm not a developer, but this has been on my mind more and more. Even within communities like Indie Hackers or Product Hunt or the private community that you're building or managing.
How can products and digital experiences evolve to give people a little personal space? Should they? Does the world need this? If so, what would it look like? What would be on the list of features or functionality to build or leave out of a new app or community to make this happen?
