Make something of value, generate value for the world.
IndieHackers used to be mostly cool people, who wanted to create value for the world but were beginning to realise that you don’t need to VC to do it.
But now it seems there are a lot more lower value posts.
There’s no trick: just make something of value. Just because you’re aiming to make a small amount of money first, doesn’t mean you have to be a spammy person who tries to win by trickery.
Andrew I believe the question is still valid to ask. There are times where business product arms exist non-related to their native application and a pool of negative reviews from another product vertical can influence initial traction. Protecting early stage products has different strategy, the questions purpose was to understand how people deal with those circumstances and if they take alternate tactics. Instead of judging without context, focus on constructive feedback.
I haven't purchased app store reviews so I'll only be able to answer, "Purchasing app store reviews good/bad idea?" I think that's a bad idea. You and your app lose credibility. Might be better to reach out to influencers and just offer them a free copy of the app for their honest reviews. I've bought products in the past where the reviewer starts with something like, "Company X sent me this product for me to review. They are not paying me and review is my honest opinion... etc"
