Quit my job to do open-source full-time

Hey Indie Hackers! 👋

Long time no see, and many things changed in the past months.

About me

If you don’t know me, I was an IBMer for ten years (quit during the pandemic), and worked on Codesandbox for the past two years. In these two years, I started to build a few open-source side-projects because I love coding and building things.

But everything changed upside-down two months ago (I wrote about it here).

I quit my job to work full-time on my projects and focus on my dreams to become a real indie-hacker (not just a side-indie-hacker 😁).

Why?

It is simple. Everything aligned in my life to try myself out in the “real world” and pursue my dreams.

  • I have support from my family.
  • I have enough money in the bank.

Nothing else is needed, so why not?

The worst thing that could happen is that I need to find a job, but that is something I’m not aiming to.

How is it going?

It has been a month since I quit officially. I enjoy every moment of it. I have more time to focus on my family, myself, and my main project.

From an income point of view, well, it is way lower. But that is okay, I expected it. 👍

All the income from my projects are from donations over OpenCollective and GitHub Sponsors, which is around 400€/month. So I’m doing a freelance work to compensate the income difference on a fantastic project called Webstudio (worth checking out). 👍

What’s next?

  • The community and I have many exciting features for Coolify that could significantly improve the use-cases and user-base.
  • I realized, I need to concentrate on the marketing part of Coolify, so more people will know about it.

If you have any questions, please leave them below or on Twitter.❤️

PS: I would like to write monthly updates about my journey here, but if you like the email format, be sure to subscribe to my newsletter.
