Remote team meetings — making them not awful

What makes virtual meetings (and group video calls in general) engaging and useful vs. terrible? I've been running remote meetings for years for my multiple startups, some good, some that... honestly should have just been an email. Lately I've been trying to determine what makes the good ones good. I'm also indie hacking a tool that does some of the work for me (slideswith.com), so it's top of mind for me. With a lot of trial and error, I think I know how to make meetings more engaging, and wanted to share in case it helps you guys.

(Allow me to be tautological: ) getting your team engaged is the key to better remote meetings. So how to do that? There are four elements to group engagement:
🤝 Buy-in: a person's investment in your shared success and agreement with your larger goals as a company or unit.
🤗 Comfort level: the individual's feeling of acceptance within the group.
👀 Interest: how much the topic is personally relevant to each person.
☝️Interaction: How much a person shares, participates, or is called upon in any way during the meeting.

Increasing any of these, in my experience, will grow your overall engagement during a video call. There are actionable things you can do (like today in your next meeting) that will boost these elements.
